What is Mars?

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System, larger than only Mercury. Mars is named in the English language after a Roman god of war. The surface of Mars consists primarily of elements similar to Earth's crust, while its core is made up of iron and nickel. Mars has a thin atmosphere and a crust primarily made up of elements similar to Earth's crust.

It has two irregularly shaped moons: Phobos and Deimos, as well as impact craters, valleys, and dunes.

Olympus Mons, one of the largest volcanoes in the Solar System, and Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the Solar System are some of the most notable surface features on Mars.

Around 40% of the planet is covered by the Borealis basin in the Northern Hemisphere, which may be the site of a large impact.

The rotation period and tilt of the rotational axis of Mars and Earth are similar, so days and seasons on Mars are comparable to those on Earth. In Mars, the atmospheric pressure is less than 1% of what it is on Earth, preventing liquid water from existing.

As both of Mars' polar ice caps are mostly made up of water, it's likely that Mars was wetter in the distant past, and therefore more suitable for life. However, it is unknown whether life has ever existed on Mars.

But our close cousin was not always an arid world, at the mercy of the solar wind. There was a time when water covered much of the Martian surface and potential life could have developed there... The possibility of life on Mars is a subject of significant interest to astrobiology due to its proximity and similarities to Earth. To date, no proof has been found of past or present life on Mars. Cumulative evidence shows that during the ancient Noachian time period, the surface environment of Mars had liquid water and may have been habitable for microorganisms. The existence of habitable conditions does not necessarily indicate the presence of life. Scientific searches for evidence of life began in the 19th century, and continue today via telescopic investigations and deployed probes. While early work focused on phenomenology
