In the 7th century, the Tibetan Empire reached into Central Asia's Tarim Basin and the Pamirs before being divided into several territories. It was only in the 18th century that the current borders of Tibet were established.
During the Xinhai Revolution against the Qing dynasty in 1912, Tibet declared independence and was later annexed by China. Dissident groups active in exile maintain tensions regarding Tibet's political status.
There are approximately 6 million Tibetan speakers spread across the Tibetan Plateau, including Lhasa, Kham, Amdo, as well as parts of Nepal and northern India.
The spoken Tibetan language varies by region, but the written language follows Classical Tibetan, sharing a script with Ladakh and Dzongkha.
In modern China, Tibet is considered part of East Asia, and the Central China plain is considered part of Central Asia.
